Grazing For Profit

It would be easy for graziers to manage their land in the same manner that has been employed for over a century by western Division pastoralists. However, there exists a small group of graziers that have ventured outside their comfort zone, and are challenging the management practices that have stood for a long time undisputed.

There are few industries containing more passionate producers than many of the custodians of Western Lands Leases. Bill Stonnill and Marissa Vincent are two that are pushing boundaries to improve efficiencies of their grazing operation west of Bourke.

Some initiatives of the Grazing For Profit school include reducing adverse pressure on country with a form of rotational grazing. Pipeline water reticulation systems improve water use efficiencies by a staggering 90% over surface water methods, and offer greater control of ferals and the ability to supplement stock water with precise doses of nutrients.

All these improvements come at a huge cost for an industry plagued by marketing difficulties over the past couple of decades. “ We have a responsibility to our children wanting to come onto the land, we must hand them a legacy of increasing efficiencies, there is no room in this industry for short term gains.”
